Flatbed Shipping: Chicago & Beyond

Flatbed shipping is transportation for cargo that may not require the enclosure of a dry van, cannot be loaded or unloaded from a dock, or does not fit within the dimensions of standard truck trailers. A flatbed’s design allows for cranes and forklifts to load goods from all angles.

Flatbed shipping provides some dimensional flexibility for large freight since there are no physical walls.  Where dry van trailers are loaded from the rear, flatbed trucks can be loaded from either side, as well as the top and back. Flatbed equipment includes step decks, double drops, and RGNs

What is Oversized Load Transportation?

Oversized load transportation refers to the movement of very large or heavy items that are too large to be transported on standard shipping trucks or trailers. These items may be too wide, too tall, or too long to fit within the legal size and weight limits for regular road transportation. Examples of oversized loads might include construction equipment, industrial machinery, and large prefabricated structures.

To transport oversized loads, specialized equipment and vehicles are often required, such as lowboy trailers, flatbed trailers, and hydraulic trailers. Flatbed shipping vehicles are designed to accommodate the size and weight of the load and may be equipped with features such as hydraulic goosenecks and extendable decks to help load and unload the cargo.

Oversized load transportation can be complex and requires careful planning and coordination. It is typically handled by specialized transportation companies with experience and expertise in moving oversized loads. These companies are responsible for obtaining the necessary permits, escorts, and other logistics to safely and efficiently transport the load.
